Sponsor Appleton S. Bridges donated the building to the City of San Diego upon its completion. In 1966 the museum added a west wing and a sculpture court which doubled its dimension, and an east wing in 1974 further elevated its exhibition space recommended site. Plans are underway for a renovation to the rotunda, sculpture garden, façade, auditorium, and other options. In 1753, the British Museum was established and the Old Royal Library assortment of manuscripts was donated to it for public viewing.
